What you need to know about Twitch’s copyright crackdown
Last month, Twitch sent an email to users announcing a crackdown on copyright infringement. Shortly after the email, user’s began seeing some of their clips and video on demand (VOD) footage deleted.
The major crackdown on copyright infringement stemmed from a sudden spike in Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notifications. Prior to May of this year, Twitch streamers received fewer than 50 DMCA complaints. Over the last few months, that number has ballooned to thousands each week.
Because of the sudden increase in DMCA notifications, Twitch had to swiftly remove content that violated copyright infringement – including clips with copyrighted music in the background. While the swift change caught many users off-guard, it was a necessary one to keep the platform compliant and legal.
